Concert Review: Nightwish @ The Docks, Toronto
Last night was the big return of Nightwish. After searching for over a year, they finally found a new vocalist. A new album was released, and the tour began just about a month ago.
We stood there as Paradise Lost was playing, and despite putting on a decent opener show we just couldn’t care for them. We were so pumped to see what the new Nightwish would be like. We’ve heard the new CD over and over again (It’s actually really good. It was going to be hard to replace Tarja, she had voice that would be very hard to beat in a live setting.
The crowd was roaring, it was an amazing crowd, everyone was pumped and cheering. Finally, Nightwish comes out, in parts. Last one to come out was Anette, the new vocalist. She looked pumped and ready to go!
The show opened with a brilliant start and it just kept getting better. They did a lot from their new album (Obviously), and then followed up with some more of their classics. Anette did an amazing job, she was very into it, moving around a lot, rocking out. Her voice was great and worked very well with their new stuff, she pulled off some of the old stuff very well, however a few of the older more Tarja-like songs just didn’t fit for her. Anette can’t pull off the opera voice very well (And she actually skipped a part of one of the songs that had it), but apart from that she did a great job.
Highlight of the concert was easily the playing of “Slaying the Dreamer”, and the 14 minute epic playing of “The Poet and the Pendulum” and of course, the awesome 3-song encore.
All in all, I am very happy that I was finally able to see Nightwish live, even without Tarja they put on an amazing show and I’m very happy for Anette. It must be very hard to go up on stage there every time as a replacement for Tarja, but she did a great job, and the entire band looked very happy with their performance.
